Galveston Ball defeated the Fort Bend Elkins Knights 6-5 on Tuesday in a come from behind win in their season opener.

In the top of the fifth inning, Galveston Ball, down five runs, tied the score when senior Haley Hall led off the fifth with a line drive single up the middle. Junior pitcher Janae Girouard stepped to the plate and hammered a 2-run homerun over the left center wall, cutting Elkins’ lead to three.

Singles by senior Copley Davis, senior Britaney Shaw and sophomore Grace Smith loaded the bases for freshman Mackenzie Clark, who drove in a run with a ground ball fielder’s choice to second base that brought the Tors within one run of the Knights.

A timely two-out single from sophomore Brianna Reyes scored Shaw to tie the game at five heading into the bottom of the fifth. In the top of the sixth, the Tors took the lead on a Grace Smith single that scored Davis from second.

Shaw, Smith, Hall and Girouard led the Lady Tor hit parade with a pair of hits each. The Lady Tors scattered 11 hits on the night.

Girouard (1-0) got the win for Ball High, striking out 10 hitters in seven innings of work.

Both teams are scheduled to return to district action 6:30 p.m. Tuesday. Santa Fe (2-0 in district) travels to Galena Park, while Ball High (1-1) will face Texas City.
