Starting pitcher Keegan Gavin gave the Nederland Bulldog hitters fits Wednesday night as the senior’s right arm carried the Tors to a 2-0 win and a 1-0 lead in the best of three games series against the 26-5A runner-ups in the Texas high school baseball playoffs. Gavin gave up one hit in his seven-inning complete game performance while striking out nine Bulldogs in Nederland.

The Tors scratched out single runs in the second and third innings and then relied on Gavin’s right arm and the Tor’s sterling defense to seal the win.

“We have a lot of energy coming toward the playoffs,” Gavin said still flushed from his one-hitter. “It’s our senior year, so we want to go out there hard. Coach (Russell) Ferrell really has us on our toes keeping up the energy. I’m really confident with our defense.”

The Tor defense performed flawlessly in the field with senior catcher Adam Trevino leading the way behind the plate with a solid performance. Senior third baseman Spencer Addison’s spectacular play on third robbed the Bulldog’s of at least two hits with his outstanding defense.

Senior Chris Orton, playing centerfield Wednesday night, led the Tor hit parade with a leadoff single to begin the game. He added a triple to center in the third which led to the first Tor run. Orton wheedled his way on to the base paths four times: the two hits, an intentional walk and an error and he scored the only run the Tors would need Wednesday night.

The Tors take on the Bulldog’s Thursday evening at Tor Field in game two of the best of three series. Starting time is 7:30 p.m.  Hear all the action live on KTOR the Tornado.
