Tor Baseball Hosts First Annual Sandbar Showdown

Tor baseball took a mighty jump on Leap Day Saturday when Ball High hosted the first annual Sandbar Showdown at the Tor Field complex near 81st Street. Seven teams competed in the tournament: Manvel, Clear Creek, Barbers Hill, Grand Oaks, Brazoswood, Summer Creek and host Ball High.

The Tors finished 2-3 over the three-day tournament with a 10-2 win over Summer Creek and an 8-2 manhandling of Manville while suffering defeat at the hands of Brazoswood (3-1), Grand Oaks (9-7) and Barbers Hill (5-0).

The Tors swing back into action Friday against Nederland and will compete in the Barbers Hill tournament that will take place March 5th Friday and Saturday March 6th.

According to Coach Russell Ferrell the tournament was a major success. “I thought the Sandbar Showdown went great.  We got many compliments on our facility, our island, and our hospitality, and we got to play baseball. Mother nature cooperated with beautif  ul weather, which made the tournament good for everyone.  Early in the season, we just want to play games, and see how we measure up, therefore I’m happy that we got 5 games.  As far as our team, we started slow with our first 2 games on Thursday where nothing seemed to go right – not sure if was jitters, or just getting settled – but Friday and Saturday were much better for the Tors.  Our last 3 games, we seemed to play with more urgency and enthusiasm – and the results showed with us getting 2 wins our last 3 games, and our 1 loss on Friday night was probably the best we played all weekend.”
